14/15122015 Signals (on canvas) 

I’ve finally started a physical version of the digital drawings I worked on earlier the year. I’m loosely basing it on a few of my previous pieces, but I’m trying to allow the process to dictate the composition. Beforehand, I’ve thought that having a detailed and structured plan was important, but the outcome of this continued to vary, so instead with this piece, im giving in to my instincts and seeing how it plays out.
Having recently framed a few of the earlier Signals works, (everything changes in a frame) I was pleased and excited by their outcome. Conceptually, there is an element of architecture to these voids, and their erratic nature gives an impression of the digital landscape but at the same time they lack a narrative. This is of course contradictory to my interest in revealing the narrative through the viewers presence, but you could argue that each viewer would have their own narrative of the compositions (like any art). Then again, with no revealed narrative and instead simply abstract contortions of lines, it becomes a classic example of justifying contradiction and curbing narrative to fit the practice.

Nonetheless, for this piece I’m letting the process create the work. The narrative and concept has been set throughout the MA.

I’m interested in distorting the lines with a frosted Perspex over the top of the canvas, to give a more screen like impression. (I’d love to add lighting to this piece but I’m open to change).

Oculus Rift Tests 20112015

I’ve managed to create and test a few Oculus Rift environments. They are crude, but they worked well. It hasn’t proved too difficult to implement the head tracking which is positive for future projects.

It was a great opportunity to experiment with the kit. Thank you Alejandro!!

They are impressive. The only downside in my mind is the screen resolution, but given certain company’s recent successes with 4K (and higher) screen resolution, hopefully it’ll be better on the commercial release.

This is clearly very similar to some of the work I’ve been doing this year, visualising online connections. It also highly contradicts what I wrote at the beginning of the term, but I couldn’t help myself. I’m looking into including Twitter’s open source APIs to integrate live feed information based on conflict. Its an ongoing struggle, especially as I get to terms with learning to code…..

However, these are stills from an interactive, Javascript model of the work. The next step will be to use the Leap Motion to interact with the programme. I’m looking to exhibit some prints in an exhibition this month. I’m thinking I may use the format from the first two, as there is almost a sense of conflict between the two sides. Ultimately though, I’d like to project it, and give the viewer some sort of interaction, whether its a mouse or a leap motion etc.. I still haven’t successfully integrated my figurative and architectural work with these systems, however I thought I’d display this version. Again, this isn’t I hoped, I want to move more towards meaningful displays of information, however this is proving harder than I thought… nonetheless I still feel a sense of progress from previous versions of the work.

This clip is a test looking at a potential virtual environment. Its leads on from work i did earlier this year looking at manifestations of device signals and information traffic. Supersymmetry certainly struck a chord with me, and its probably evident. I’ve hit a few walls in texturising each line with different pieces of media, yet this is still an ongoing process and I aim to include it eventually.

Similar to Mixed Signals and Somewhere Beyond the .com these lines began as drawings, and have gone through a number of programs to give this result. My next step would be to add realistic figures to this environment.

SOUND!! This will be composed and recorded in the coming weeks. Being someone very interested in music and SFX, I will look to incorporate them. I tried today, but it appears my 5 year old laptop is losing its edge. I’ll try again on the uni computers soon!

My ultrasonic circuit is looking like its not going to be ready for the interim, so I’m considering going down this avenue for the show.

21012015 Tutorial II

 We spoke about my experimentation. Having looked into a variety of mixed media, my intention is to find a balance. Physically I’ve been drawing a lot, painting is something I continue to do, however so far in my research work, I haven’t really found its place. I’ve only been interested to use paint figuratively, as it allows me to be more durable with the final image. Recently my work has been focused on visualising device signals. The progression of this, is to look into how these patterns can be augmented with reality or created in virtual environments. (Mixed Signals I + II, Somewhere Beyond the.com, 01022015 and 03022015). All of this work has hoped to create an abstract impression of everyday connections. Recent tests with blender have been positive, the impact of creating light and shade brings a more realistic impression to these signals. This will help when including architecture and urban infrastructure to the images. I will continue to work with blender, and potentially UE4.

The main point I took from the tutorial was the importance of making maquettes. With my mixed media approach, it allows me to create a miniature of my intentions. The second point was to look at stained glass windows. I’ve recently been testing an LED / Ultrasonic circuit with an arduino, with little luck so far. After speaking with Jonathan, though I should really be asking Ed about this, ultrasonic sensors are notoriously difficult, and it would be better to look into leap motion or an Xbox kinect. The action I’m trying to perform is for LEDs, placed behind a frosted glass panel illuminating gradually as a person approaches. This is to mimic the effect of a head-torch, or lantern, to create a sense of discovery when stumbling across it. In front of the glass will be a laser cut scene, first drawn, and then turned to vector. I’m focused on this idea of the artwork recognising that it has a viewer, and I aim to make small-scale examples of my intentions. Another technological aspect we discussed was the inclusion of projectors. It is not easy to find enough suitable space for a projector to be working through the back of the canvas, as i’d hoped, (though i will continue to experiment with this). Jonathan mentioned short throw projectors, pico projectors, or using one with a 45degree mirror and adjusting the keystoning. These are all possibilities I hope to explore. We talked about the difference between LED and LCD projectors, LEDs have a greater depth of focus, and therefore will remain in focus when placed on a curve. This could be useful when looking at more sculptural experiments.

Other than this, we looked at the work of Daniel Rozen, and compared the similarities between exploring technology through simple materiality, as well as the audience participation involved in his work. Daniel Rozen ‘Wooden Mirror’ 1999:

Another important point for me was to focus on organising and updating my blog. At the beginning of the course, I felt the blog an intrusive force on my practice, and although i realise I must to learn to deal with it, recent weeks have proved particularly unsuccessful. I really do need to organise its functionality, i.e categories, tags, a menu… There is a lot to be done!
